On occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, L’Oréal Foundation and UNESCO on 11 February 2020 announced the names of five winners for the 22nd L’Oréal-Unesco for Women in Science Awards. Dr. Firdausi Qadri, an eminent scientist, well known for leading the Mucosal Immunology and Vaccinology Unit of the Infectious Diseases Division at the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease and Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b), who is also the Chairperson of Institute for Developing Science and Health Initiatives (ideSHi) was named as the winner from the Asia Paicific region.
The award comes as recognition for her outstanding contribution to understanding and preventing infectious diseases affecting children in developing countries, and promoting early diagnosis and vaccination with global health impact, according to a press statement.
She will receive a prize money worth €100,000, at a ceremony at the Unesco headquarters in Paris, France.
Four other winners of the award are Prof Abla Mehio Sibai from Africa and the Arab States, Prof Edith Heard from Europe, Prof Esperanza Martínez-Romero from Latin America, and Prof Kristi Anseth from North America.
