World Thalassemia Day Observed with Awareness & Screening Program by ideSHi at Bulua Degree College, Noakhali

On World Thalassemia Day, ideSHi (institute for developing Science and Health initiatives) organized a comprehensive awareness and screening program at Bulua Degree College in Noakhali, aiming to educate and engage the local community on the importance of thalassemia prevention. The event was graced by the presence of Dr. Firdausi Qadri, a globally acclaimed scientist and the head of ideSHi, who served as the keynote speaker. Her insightful address emphasized the urgent need for increased awareness, early diagnosis, and preventive measures to combat the growing burden of thalassemia in Bangladesh.

The program was chaired by Mr. Abu Zafar Muhammad Harun, Principal of Bhulua Degree College, who welcomed the initiative and encouraged students to take proactive steps in understanding hereditary health issues. Dr. Rofiqur Rahman, Chief Operating Officer of ideSHi, delivered the welcome speech, outlining the objectives of the event and the importance of collaborative efforts between scientific institutions and educational communities.

The event featured a series of educational talks and interactive sessions designed to inform students, faculty members, and residents about thalassemia, its genetic transmission, symptoms, and long-term impact. Special emphasis was placed on the role of carrier screening, premarital counseling, and public health education in preventing the spread of the disorder. Participants were encouraged to ask questions and engage with health experts, making the sessions highly interactive and informative.

A key highlight of the program was the on-site blood sample collection for thalassemia screening. A total of 96 blood samples were collected from students and volunteers at the college, marking a significant step toward early detection and awareness. The collected samples will be tested to identify carriers of the thalassemia gene, enabling participants to make informed decisions about their health and future.

The program concluded with a strong message of hope and responsibility, emphasizing the power of knowledge in preventing genetic diseases. Through initiatives like this, ideSHi continues to play a vital role in building a healthier, more informed society, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas where access to genetic education and testing remains limited.
